French Art Nouveau Design Leather Clutch Bag by Brevete

A leather clutch bag with Art Nouveau design made by Brevete of France, and which most likely dates back to the period, making this a genuine antique. The lightly tooled design was originally painted - there are now-faded remnants of colours, pink and green - and features typical flower motifs against a darker background and it has been monogrammed with the letters "NW". The bag also features a suitably-designed clasp with an orange circular raised "button" in a plastic-type material forming part of the decoration. The underside of the metal half ring which opens and closes the clasp bears the name "Brevete".

The bag has been repaired in several places in its long history, most recently by us to stabilise and make good the outer binding which runs across the edges of the bag and the flap. An interior fabric compartment would benefit from some attention to re-attach one corner of it to the bag, but the main leather divider inside the bag is in good shape. There are considerable signs of age and wear to the bag, but the leather has been re-conditioned and feels good, and structurally the bag feels sound. The handle is similarly sturdy and feels suitable for continued use.

The bag measures approximately 26cm (10¼ in.) by 16cm (6¼ in.) and without contents is about 2cm (¾ in.) deep, with the sides able to expand to approximately 5cm (2 in.).

Art Deco Metal Cigarette Box with Faux Wood Design

Not dissimilar to the shape of a World War One tank, this great little Art Deco cigarette box in metal with hinged lid, features a faux wood effect in two tones and typical geometrical designs. Most likely made for the Squirrel brand of cigarettes, this is an unusual and eye-catching item.

In good overall condition and structurally solid, the box could certainly perform a new role. There is some slight pitting to the top surface and some general signs of age and use throughout, but otherwise the box is clean and cosmetically good, with very little fading to the colours (as is often the case with boxes of this type).

The box measures 9 cm wide by 12 cms deep by 6.5 cm high (3½ in. by 4½ in. by 2½ in.)

Antique Leuchars & Son Leather Case with refreshed mustard lining

This is one of those items about which it would be wonderful to know more. Who owned it? Was it specially made for them? Where has it travelled to? What we do know is that the owner of the case had the initials "M.W.", that it was handcrafted with quality materials, and made by Leuchars & Son. (later taken over by the esteemed Asprey house) sometime in the early part of the 20th Century or latter part of the 19th Century. Certainly it was made when Leuchars & Son had premises in Piccadilly, London and in Paris, because it is stamped to that effect in the lid. What we also know is that originally it had something resembling a grooming kit layout or at least it was something designed to carry implements or objects both small and large. The interior previously had a blue fabric lining, long since departed. What remains is a relatively large, unusually-shaped case finished in leather and pig skin (it is believed) and which is ready for a new life somewhere. Doing what, is left to the buyer, but it would certainly be a useful storage box for any number of things and an interesting one at that!

The case is structurally quite sound, although it should be borne in mind just how old this is, so casually throwing it around is not recommended. The lining has been replaced with a modern bright mustard yellow (almost gold, but not quite) which should prove to be hard wearing enough and provides a contemporary flourish to the otherwise black casing. The lock does not come with a key, but the catch does operate enough to keep the lid in place. Finally, the handle has been repaired using remnants of the original interior in order to retain as much originality as possible.

The case measures approcximately 29cm in length (11½ in.) with a depth of 11cm (4¼ in.) and a height of 7.5cm (3 in.). Internally the measurements are approximately 27cm (10¾ in.) by 9.5cm (3¾ in.) by 6cm (2¼ in.)

Antique Chunky Gilt Frame with Blackboard

Perfect for larger notices and signs with a touch of distinction, this genuine antique gilt frame has been supplemented with a contemporary blackboard which will take a traditional chalk stick or chalk pen and wipes clean with a damp cloth or sponge. The frame itself has classical geometric decoration and beading details and certainly makes a statement. It's bold and distinctive and would certainly catch the eye, whether at home, in an event venue, or in a restaurant or retail environment.

The outer frame measures 57.5cm x 42.5cm ( 22.5in. x 16.75in.) and the blackboard (frame aperture) is 46cm x 31cm (18in. x 12in.).

There is age-related wear and tear to the frame which adds to the look and contrasts well with the blackboard, and there is some slight gaping in the mitres but nothing very noticeable or concerning. The frame is sound and solid otherwise. Please note: no fixings are provided with this particular frame, but there are eyelet rings already present on the frame ready for horizontal hanging if that is the buyer's preference.

Antique Decorative Gilt Gesso Frame with Blackboard

Perfect for to-do lists, shopping lists, or notices and signs with a touch of distinction, this genuine antique gilt gesso frame has been supplemented with a contemporary blackboard which will take a traditional chalk stick or chalk pen and wipes clean with a damp cloth or sponge. The frame itself has ornate and elegant decoration of flourishes and floral motifs but is subtle enough not to be overwhelming or fussy.

The outer frame measures 36.5cm x 29cm ( 14.5in. x 11.5in.) and the blackboard (frame aperture) is 32cm x 24cm (12.5in. x 9.5in.).

There is age-related wear and tear to the frame which adds to the look and contrasts well with the blackboard. There is evidence of previous woodworm which has been treated and there is some slight gaping in the mitres but nothing very noticeable or concerning. The frame is sound and solid otherwise. Please note: no fixings are provided with this particular frame, but - due to its lightness and smaller size - a standard hanging arrangement would suffice for wall hanging or it could be easily stand-mounted.

Original Victorian / Edwardian Turned Wood Door Knobs

Of unknown age but most likely Victorian or Edwardian due to their styling, this pair of original turned wood door knobs - with shaft, screws and washer, but no backplates - are in good condition with wear commensurate with age and very nice patina / colouring. The knobs match but there is some difference between the two in terms of wear and fading, which should be noted. They have been cleaned and given a clear BriWax finish.

Each knob has the following measurements:

Length: 5cm (2in.)
Maximum Diameter: 5cm (2in.)
Minimum Diameter: 2.5cm (1in.)

The shaft is 1/4 in. square in profile (6mm) and measures 10.2 cm (4in.). The holes in the shaft allow the knobs to be between 1 1/4 in. (3cm) and 2 1/2 in. (6.5cm) apart.

Antique Ebonised and Gilded Bobbin Legged Octagonal “Gypsy” Table

As found, this stunning antique octagonal "Gypsy" table - dating from the late 1800s or early 1900s - features ebonised bobbin turned legs with gilded banding, a great shape and loads of character. A piece of furniture which is certainly a conversation piece!

The top, made from three separate pieces of wood, is a little uneven and could do with some attention, but is functional "as is", either with or without a new surface covering. Due to the age of this item the gilding is worn in some places but the ebonised wood is otherwise in an extremely good state - particularly the central "ball" - with wear and only to the extremities of the legs. We wouldn't want it any other way and we have not attempted anything more than a gentle clean in order to retain the undoubted character of the table.

The top measures 53 cm (21 in) square and the table height is 58cm (23 in)
