A fabulous compact mid-century "IW3" rocking chair of beech construction and in a black and natural wood finish. It was designed by Illum Wikkelso for Niels Eilersen of Denmark and it most likely dates from the 1960s. The chair was produced from the late 1950s onwards. The original maker's label can be found underneath the seat. It's a very attractive and striking design and is more compact and stylish than most rocking chairs, and very typical of Wikkelso design.

The seat of the chair has been re-painted black with a satin finish and waxed and shows some signs of wear. It could be re-painted/stripped if required. The rest of the chair is in original natural wood finish. The chair has signs of both age and use throughout - it's at least 50 years old and so it's to be expected that it should have superfical grazes, bumps and scrapes. The runners have at some stage had rubber protection applied to them. Some of the rubber remains in places but for the most part it has perished.

Dimensions:

Depth (extremities, front to back): 73cm
Height: 94cm
Width (widest point): 59cm
Seat Height (front, resting): 44cm
Seat Height (back, resting): 34cm
Seat Depth: 45cm

A matching pair of original and unusually shaped low stools, probably intended for a kitchen, with beech frames dating from the 1950s. The seats are not square, instead tapering slightly from back to front and the legs extend to very pleasing ball feet. The stools have their original vinyl covers which are intact but which are not in the best state (see photo), with some paint marks and minor tear damage. Although we loved the original covers, we have treated the stools to a fresh Scandinavian-style design in olive green, blue and brown on a white background, but left the original covers underneath should the buyer wish to use them.

The stools have been carefully cleaned, sanded and waxed.

Stool dimensions:

Maximum Width (seat rear): 38.5 cm
Minimum Width (seat front): 35.5 cm
Depth (seat front to rear): 39cm
Seat Height: 44cm

The stool tops measure 30 cm by 25 cm (12 in by 9¾ in) and the height of each stool is 58 cm (23 in). Please be aware that these are heavily used vintage items and have significant signs of use, including scratches, gouges and paint splatters, but they have been sanded and suitably waxed to provide a smooth and hard-wearing finish.

Nested set of teak tables designed by Poul Hundevad

A mid-Century rectangular teak table with beech frame incorporating a nest of three small teak topped circular tables, also with beech frames. This piece was made in the early 1960s from designs by Poul Hundevad of Denmark by Novy Domov of the former Czechoslovakia (as affirmed by the stamp on the underneath of the main table - see photos).

The rectangular table has casters and ingeniously houses the smaller tables in slots which allow them to be easily slid out from the unit and unfolded. We obtained this item in a heavily (overly, in our opinion) stained state, but we have carefully returned it to a more natural look. The beech legs of the main table and the individual tables have a matt wax finish and the teak has been restored using Danish oil for an understated but nonetheless contrasting colour scheme. As one might expect of an item of this age, there are signs of use, but no major flaws or damage. One of the slots underneath the main table has a piece missing but this does not affect its functioning nor is it immediately visible.

Dimensions

Main rectangular table:
Width: 62cm (21½ in)
Depth: 42cm (16½ in)
Height: 56cm (21½ in)

Individual circular tables:
Diameter: 38cm (15 in)
Height: 48cm (19 in)

We really like the clean lines of the furniture when the tables are nested and think that in this newly-restored state that it would not only be a good-looking addition to the home, but also a very functional one.

Made in Estonia by Luterma this lightweight bistro style chair - most likely dating from the early 1900s and sold into the French market - has a bent plywood seat with an embossed floral ornament design and a beech frame.

Luterma were globally renowned for their expertise in moulding plywood (they made boxes, suitcases and even bags from plywood) and this chair is an excellent example of their work in very good condition. There is, as you might expect from a chair this old, some wear to the seat but the embossed design is very much visible and intact (unlike some you might see).

The skillfully crafted frame (it has some wonderful transitions from straight to curved facets) has had some cosmetic incarnations in its lifetime in the form of re-staining, but is in good condition too. We have done nothing but a gentle clean in terms of restoration so as to retain the undoubted character that this chair has. It's a great item, fully-functional if you want to sit on it, and definitely an unusual addition to any home or commercial environment. We love it and are pleased to be able to offer it to you.
