MB Games “Bed Bugs” – the motorised hopping, leaping, jumping game – complete (1985)

A bit of a classic this one, if you're of a certain age. This is the 1985 MB Games "Bed Bugs" game, which unsuprisingly consists mostly of a "bed" and a load of "bugs". The aim of the game is to catch the coloured bugs in the bed which match your playing tweezers. The catch? (pun intended) The battery-powered motor underneath the bed sends those bugs leaping, hopping and jumping around, so grabbing them in your tweezers is no mean feat at all. It's a lot of fun. We've tested it to ensure that it meets the required standards of fun-ness (and we actually liked it so much we bought another one just to keep for ourselves!)

This one is in very good condition, complete (all bugs and tweezers), and in full working order. It takes two C-size batteries in the battery compartment, access to which is under the card insert of the bed.

Vintage 1960s Kays Identity Kit Face Image Creation Set

Billed as "hours of entertainment" with "thousands of variations" this is the Kay's "Identity Kit" game, from the 1960s, comprised of a large selection of head shapes and facial features for children to combine into recognisable or unrecognisable faces on the master sheet which has a transparent cover. Additional features can then be drawn onto the cover to add to the fun. This set has not been much used at all - many of the pieces are still arrached to their base sheet, and those that have are included in the spaces in the box tray. We can't be sure if it's complete but there are plenty of sheets and pieces to use, so regardless of whether it's 90% complete or 95% complete it's certainly not limited. An intriguing item... and not just for children.

Waddingtons Raleigh Burner BMX Board Game (1985)

A VERY 1980s board game, this is Waddingtons' collaboration with Raleigh: "Raleigh Burner BMX" a dice-rolling, card-pulling game centred around the BMX bikes of the same name. It features obstacles, jumps and other racing incidents in order to determine the winning rider. The game is almost complete in terms of the playing side, but it is lacking the promotional stickers and poster which originally were included. One of the six BMX gameplay pieces requires some attention to be fully usable - it's present but has a broken base, so please bear that in mind. The playing cards are all present, the dice too, and all of the plastic board elements are there as well. The board itself is in good shape, though slightly warped. Instructions are provided.

An unusual game which is sure to take some people right back to a time of stunt pegs, whitewall tyres, and bunny hops. Ahem.

1980 Boxed MB Electronics Genius Sliding Lights Puzzle Handheld Game

A game that might have passed you by back in the day is this MB Electronics "Genius" game. It's an electronic variation on the familiar sliding tile puzzle games of the past, but instead of trying to complete a picture by manipulating the tiles, the twist here is that the tiles are uniform and indicate their correct position by lighting up. It's weirdly addictive, frustrating, and fascinating... a test of memory and strategy as well as patience!

It runs on two AA batteries and is fully working, complete with original box and instructions. It's in good condition with no chips or cracks to the plastics.

Intercept – Electronic Search and Destroy Game by Lakeside 1978

This is "Intercept" by Lakeside which dates from 1978. It's an electronic game for two players played on a tabletop board resembling a gridded map. One player takes the role of fighter pilot (attack) and the other takes the role of missile commander (defence). The aim of the game is for the pilot to avoid detection and make it across the grid to the target and destroy it, and for the defence commander to obviously seek out and destroy the fighter before that happens. If you can imagine it, it's a little bit like an evolving game of computer battleship. It's part mechanical, part electronic and is a noisy game... and also engaging once you get the hang of it and the strategy.

It's uncommon to find this electronic game in working and complete condition, including the original instruction manual and all the playing pieces, but here is one. It takes one 9V battery and the battery compartment is nice and clean. Otherwise, very little cosmetic signs of age and wear. The box does have some signs of both, but it's in good shape considering its age.

1980s “Air Blitz” toy by Mako – “Chutes Away” / “Air Rescue” style target game

If you're familiar with Marx Toys' "Chutes Away" or Gabriel's "Air Rescue" (also its own variant "Night Rescue") then you'll immediately recognise this early 1980s target game made by Mako and called "Air Blitz" as a variant of the same. It has the same principle and is almost identical: a rotating board with an aeroplane guided by the player (via the eye piece) to drop pieces (parachutists, supplies, take your pick) onto targets on the aforementioned playing surface. It's deceptively difficult and very entertaining. No batteries, it's all wind-up power here!

This Mako version is in great cosmetic condition. Some of the stickers are as yet unapplied to the aeroplane and most importantly all of the playing pieces (the weighted parachutes) are present and correct and there's no damage to the aeroplane - both common defects. A couple of the stickers which have been applied are peeling away or are mislocated (perhaps that's why the rest didn't make it!), but that aside, it's in excellent shape. The box is somewhat tatty and over-exuberant use of tape at some point has caused some issues, but given the completeness and condition of the contents, this is a minor drawback.

Vintage Novelty Sardines Fishy Puzzle Game 1970s Hong Kong

"Packed in Pure Fun". The "Sardines" fishy puzzle is a novelty toy which is both an immediately pleasing concept and packaged in a colourful and interesting way. The aim of the puzzle is to get all of the little sardines back into the tin. It's a little harder than it might first appear - there is only one solution - but helpfully the answer is given on the underside of the "tin". In bright orange and blue, this is 1970s plastic fantastic at its finest. It's just a fun item and it would make for a gift that is certainly different from the norm.

Vintage 1970s “Incllination” marble balance game by Wiggins Teape

Inclination is a mixed game of chance and skill involving marbles and a tilting board which tests player's sense of balance. Made by Wiggins Teape and dating from the 1970s, the game is played by 2-4 players. There are game variations as detailed in the instructions on the underside of the box, but the goal of the game is to get your marbles from the centre of the board to their "home". This one is complete with all marbles (four in each of four colours), dice and the game board (which is in good condition). The box is in good condition but shows some signs of storage wear, particularly the underside which has "sunk" down and some denting to the side panels.
