Vintage Ultra Lens Illuminated Magnifying Medical Instrument / Torch

An unusal handheld medical instrument which is basically a combined magnifier and torch, the "Ultra Lens" is a chromed metal tube with eye-piece presumably for close-up inspection by medical professionals, doctors or opticians. This one was distributed by W. G. Whiting of Market Street, Manchester which may date it between the 1920s and the 1950s when Whiting's held premises below the Royal Exchange, selling razors, microscopes, barometers, and other optical instruments.

This one is in good condition bar a dent to the head (see photos) and comes complete with original box and spare bulb. It works, remarkably, though it is suspected that it won't be of much genuine use. Rather, it's an interesting curio or slightly left-field gift, most likely. The box shows more signs of use and age, as should be expected.

The torch is powered by 2 x "C" size batteries, not included.

Royal Winton Dr Nelson’s Improved Inhaler

A genuine medical curio, this is a Royal Winton inhaler "Dr. Nelson's Improved Inhaler" - designed to produce steam which when inhaled helped with chest infections and throat dehydration. Sometime additional ingredients were added to produce medical infusions. This one lacks its stopper and glass tube but it retains great character and is an interesting and distinctive item nonetheless - and probably not for actual use!

We think - and this is a conservative estimate - it dates from the early 1950s (please correct us if you think we are wrong!) and due to its use it does have some signs of age, notably some crazing to the glaze. That said, it's otherwise in a good state, has a good maker's mark and is a definite conversation piece!

“Bile Beans” laxative tin

This quirky little tin for "Bile Beans" is in good overall condition - just some slight signs of tape being around the lid/base join - with its red and cream colouring still bright and crisp. We'll dispense with any jokes about the original contents: "A reliable correction for Constipation, Liver & Stomach Disorders"! It would make for a very "different" container for small trinkets or for giving a gift in unusual packaging.

The tin measures approximately 2½ inches (6.25 cm) high with a similar diameter.
