Space Age 1970s “Dice” Lampshade by Uffe Gustav Schiøler for Hoyrup Denmark/IKEA

A lampshade which has a pedigree surpassing its unprepossessing looks, this is the "Dice" Lampshade designed by Uffe Gustav Schiøler for Hoyrup of Denmark and then acquired and later sold by IKEA. A 19cm rounded cube of plastic with circular semi-opaque panels which protrude slightly. This one is in a suitably 1970s shade of orange and is the pendant shade variation - there were desk / table lamp versions as well.

There are some minor aspects of the condition which should be noted, principally that the top curved white panel with the ring for the bulb holder is not as even as it might be. It's secure but has deformed, and although it would most likely be out of sight in normal use, the potential buyer should be aware of it. Also to the top is a hairline crack to the orange plastic - it doesn't feel like it's a worry structurally and there's no sense of becoming worse. Again, it is not noticeable in ordinary use.

The "spider" ring (for fitting the bulb holder) is not original but is a good fit for the lamp. Otherwise, the lamp is in good shape with only minor superficial surface scratches as to be expected of an item of some age.

1960s Orange Perspex Lotus Flower Space Age Pendant Lamp Shade

A fab orange perspex pendant lampshade, which dates from the 1960s and consists of two layers of "petals" which combine in a lotus flower fashion to create a very space age style look. The shade is both heavy and well constructed, weighing in at over a kilogram. The top consists of a metal upper ring section into which the petals are screwed with an intengrated "spider" for accommodating the bulb holder. There are six larger outer petals and six smaller inner petals. Depending on the kind of bulb used it can either provide a soft glow effect or something a bit more illuminating with the light coming out from between the petals and from underneath. The sahde is easily assembled - the petals are screwed into place in pairs with a retaining nut on the inside of the shade. The shade will be sent disassembled if postage is required.

Top opening diameter: 10cm

In good condition with only very minor signs of age and use, i.e. some very superficial scratches to the perspex but no chips, cracks or other anomolies.

Vintage Chrome and Black Targetti Sankey Gooseneck Desk Lamp, made in Italy

A super cool looking chrome and black gooseneck desk lamp, believed to be made in Italy by Targetti Sankey and dating we think from the 1970s. With its contrasting chrome and black design and ball shaped shade with distinctively shaped "venting" it's a definite eye catcher, whether switched on or not. It is also built with impressive quality and attention to detail. For example, instead of a standard rubber or plastic gooseneck tube, this lamp has a rubberised section to the neck which is then enclosed within a spring-like coil of metal, making what would otherwise simply be a functional aspect of the lanmp into an interesting feature. It points also to a high attention to the design and manufacture of the lamp.

The lamp does have a defect - there's a dent to the shade, an almost flat spot where it has had an impact of some kind - and although it is a shame, it does not detract too much from the look of the lamp and is not in an immediately obvious location. The high reflectivity of the chrome shape also helps to distract. The base is composed of a black enamelled cast metal with a plastic underside and has a white, solid feeling swtich.
Otherwise, the lamp is in good condition, with only minor signs of age and wear. It measures approximately 48cm (19 in.) in height with the gooseneck fully extended, of which 18cm (7 in.) is the rubberised gooseneck portion. The base has an approximate diameter of 15cm (6 in.) and a depth of 3.5cm (1½ in.). The ball shade has an opening of 11cm (4¼ in.) and an overall diameter of approximately 14cm (5½ in.). It takes a standard bayonet bulb ftting.

Vintage Gooseneck Desk Lamp in Gold with Perforated Shade

An unusual gooseneck desk lamp finished in a pale gold tone with brass fixtures, which has a distinctively-shaped base and perforated shade. Most likely dating from the 1950s - although the maker is unknown, its origins are probably Continental Europe, based on the styling.
It's in good condition overall with some minor signs of both age and wear, but nothing which detracts - quite the opposite in many ways. We've added a subtle soft neoprene pad to the underside of the base, to protect surfaces when in use, but it's otherwise untampered with.

The lamp measures approximately 40 cm ( 16 in.) high with the neck fully extended. The base measures approximately 14cm (5½ in.) long, with a maximum width of 12.5cm (5 in.), and a height of 1.5cm (1 in.)

Vintage 1950s Maclamp in gold with wooden arms designed by Terence Conran for Habitat

A design classic, this is the Maclamp designed by Terence Conran for Habitat. This is the earlier version of the lamp with full wood armatures (not plastic ones as per later models) and wingnut adjusters and dates from the 1950s. This particular one has original gold painted metal shade and base and is in almost untampered condition.

The wood arms have been gently oiled to bring out their original colour. One of the lower arms has what appears to be a burn mark on it, but barring that, they are in good solid condition as are the wingnuts and metal fixtures. The metal shade bracket is slightly misshapened, but the shade itself has kept its shape and only has a few minor grazes to show for it's 60+ years of age and use, and the base is in similar condition. The bulb holder has been replaced like-for-like.

A good example of an iconic lamp and increasingly difficult to find in original condition. As with all electrical products, buyers are urged to have the lamp inspected and safety-checked prior to installation.

Vintage Yellow Gooseneck Desk or Bedside Lamp Perforated Shade

Sometimes attributed to Hala Zeist, though more likely a variation on the Maclamp model TL33, this iconic-shaped desk or bedside lamp features a perforated conical shade and brass gooseneck. Dating from the 1970s, it is presented in a yellow tone and is in good condition with only minor signs of wear and tear. The shade, perforated in two places (stars near the open end and circular holes near the closed rear), is notable in that it has retained a very good shape. The circular base houses a centrally located simple on-off push switch in black and white. An uncommon lamp, in an unusual colour, and in very presentable condition to boot.

The lamp measures approximately 38cm (15 in.) high with the neck fully extended, the neck itself is about 26cm (10 in.) in length, and the lamp base is approximately 13cm (5 in.) in diameter.

Vintage Paragon Focus-Spot Photographic Enlarger Shade

Ripe for upcycling or re-purposing, this shade from a Paragon Focus-Spot Universal Enlarger offers a distinctive shape, a cool black and white interior and aluminium exterior colour scheme, and a retaining rod ready for clamping to a stand or suspending to form a new light fixture. The shade features its original label and at the end of the retaining rod the holder takes a standard bayonet bulb. Overall, the shade has very appealing signs of age and use for that industrial or minimalist look.

The shade measures approximately 24cm (9½ in.) in length with an opening of approximately 20cm (8 in.). The retaining rod allows the bulb holder to be positioned along a length of approximately 8cm (3 in.) inside the shade and is held in place via three small knurled screws at the rear of the shade. The lamp will require rewiring and safety-checked in whatever form it is used.

President NA-416 Hi-Intensity Adjustable Desk Lamp made by Kreo (Nanbu)

Don't let this little lamp's dimensions fool you... it's a highly flexible and useful desk lamp with a tiny footprint but lots of appeal. The President Hi-Intensity Lamp by Kreo Co. Ltd. (NA-416) offers two lamp settings (low and high intensity) and rotatable and adjustable shade to direct light where you need it. The aluminium armature is also highly adjustable making this little light very useful indeed, particularly in smaller spaces. We like its unusual size and think the lamp has a particularly appealing character of its own.

The construction is a mix of white/cream and grey plastic and metal, with a wood effect plastic topping to the base - very 70s! The base also features an illuminated on/off button which is very appealing when lit and a switch for the two lamp modes. There is a distinct difference between the low and high settings of this lamp, which is not always the case with lamps of this type.

The lamp base measures 8cm by 9cm by 6cm (3¼ in. x 3½ in. x 2½ in.) and the arms extend in two sections to approximately 40cm (16 in.). The lamp is in fully working condition and good visual condition, with just some minor defects which we will draw your attention to. The worst of these is some damage to the edge of the plastic base housing, but it's not very noticeable in ordinary use. We have added felt pads to the underneath of the base where it appears a pair of original plastic "feet" have perished. As is often the case with plastics of this era there is some slight discoloration due to sunlight exposure, but this particular example is quite good in that area.

The lamp takes two small bayonet 12V15CP bulbs which are widely available.

Elegant Mid-Century Style Teak Lamp Base and Shade

We're not sure of the origins of this teak table lamp base, but what is certain is that has great styling. Regardless of where it was made and who made it - there are no maker's marks and it might very well be a one-off piece - it indisputably has a mid-century aesthetic which holds great appeal. We particularly like the slender and slightly tapered upright and the subtle sculpting to the base. We have restored the wood and paired the lamp stand with a teal colour shade which we think is the perfect complement to it.

The stand measures 25 cm (10 in.) to the bulb holder and the base has a diameter of 16 cm (6¼ in.). With the shade, the lamp measures 40 cm (16 in.) tall. The lamp looks to have its original thin wiring - which is a good length - and takes a bayonet bulb. There is some minor wear to the base and we have replaced the protective felt on the underside of it as the original was not in good shape.
