A stunning and original example of Bauhaus design, this is one of a variety of lamps designed in semi-modular fashion by Christian Dell for Kaiser Idell. It doesn't get much more stlyish than this, where form and function are so elegantly and efficiently combined to create an attractive and functional piece of lighting. This is the 6739 desk lamp which has the familiar, trademark shade shape, a clamp fitting, and is built to last a lifetime and beyond. This one most likely dates from the 1940s and is in un-tampered -with condition. There is patina to the enamelled shade which has been left "as-is" because the lamp wears it well and, to our eyes at least, it looks much more attractive than one which has been re-sprayed and looks too perfect. As it is, this is a highly sought after and aesthetically pleasing example of pure Bauhaus style.

The only intervention on this lamp has been new felt on the clamp section - just to ensure it doesn't cause damage to the surface.

The rigid part of the lamp neck measures approximately 32.5cm (12¾ in.) with the flexible gooseneck section slightly shorter than that. The "foot" of the lamp - which also houses the push button switch - measures approximately 5cm (2 in.) in height. The shade is slightly oval in shape with a maximum diameter of 21.5cm (8½in.)

A very original Bauhaus-styled black desk lamp with chrome hinged arm which rotates through 180 degrees and a distinctive bullet-shaped shade and ball and socket joint for adjusting its position. In full working condition and with original contrasting red switch, the lamp has bags of character and a striking design. Almost certainly originally made in continental Europe (German or French, possibly), and dating from at least as far back as the 1950s, the lamp has general signs of age and use throughout (including some minor dents to the shade). It has not been restored since the patina adds so much to its appeal, but it has been carefully cleaned.

The curved arm measures approximately 25cm (10 in.) in length and the lamp stands at a maximum height of 41cm (16 in.) with the arm positioned vertically. The base is 15cm (5½ in.) in diameter with a height of 2.5cm (1 in.). The shade is 15cm (6 in.) in length with an aperture diameter of 13cm (5 in.). The bulb holder is a large bayonet style and the lamp currently has a cable of approximately 120cm (47 in.) length. The underside of the base has an opening for wall-mounting the lamp. The wiring has been renewed, but as with all electrical items, an inspection and safetly test in your own environment (PAT testing in the UK) is recommended.

The association between architectural giant of the Bauhaus Movement, Walter Gropius, and the Rosenthal Porcelain company of Selb, West Germany began with the commission to design and build a factory and ultimately led to the design of this fabulous range, "TAC 1", which came to market in 1969.

Stylistically very distinctive, the various forms, angles and proportions of each item play off each other wonderfully as a set. Each piece is finished in a thin concentric pattern of slightly rough lines in a subtlely brown tone and all are in excellent condition (no cracks, no chips). Each piece is stamped in a dark green with the Rosenthal and "studio-line" marks.

Dimensions:

Teapot: 24cm from spout to handle. 12cm height. Diameter at widest part above the base, 14cm.

Jug: 14cm from spout to handle. 7cm height. Diameter at widest part above the base, 10cm.

Bowl: 10cm top diameter. 7cm height. Diameter at widest part above the base, 10cm.

We would welcome offers on this unusual set and can discuss shipping or collection oprions with interested parties.
