A very modern-looking set of cups, saucers, plates, jug, bowl, and sugar bowl made by Branksome Pottery - deceptively modern, as they were made in the 1950s! This set of items from the "Graceline" design range is presented in the typical two-tone pastel colourway, in this case a pale green and grey-green colourway, and is comprised of four cups and saucers, four small side plates, milk or cream jug, an open bowl, and a lidded sugar bowl. It's a classic design which has truly stood the test of time and would grace any table.

The set is in excellent condition with no discernible chips or cracks. Collection preferred for this item or delivery by courier arranged by buyer (please contact), in order to ensure safe transit. Please also get in touch if you are interested in individual pieces from this set.

A very entertaining and cleverly engineered vintage toy which, when correctly set up and wound up, rather dramatically and energetically emulates a gymnast on the bar apparatus. The very light plastic (celluloid, possibly) figure spins around the bar with a variety of movements based on the counterbalance of the weight provided by the vertical arm. It's impressive and very quirky!

In working condition and with only some minor signs of wear and tear to the box and some minor tarnishing to the metalwork. Otherwise, it's in very good shape indeed.

An unusual pair of bowls and plates in a lotus flower and lily pad design made by Branksome China and probably dating from the 1950s. In good condition with no chips or cracks but with possible minor imperfections from the manufacturing process. The white bowls in the lotus flower shape look very crisp and stylish and sit nicely on the green plates which have a complementary leaf shape and texture. Both the plates and the bowls are stamped underneath with the maker's mark: "Branksome China, England". The flower bowls have a slightly glossier finish than the plates which have a more matte look to them.

The bowls measure approximately 13cm in diameter and have a depth of 4cm.

The plates measure approximately 16.5cm in diameter and have a depth of 1.5cm.

A very unusual and difficult to describe item! We'll be honest and admit that we know very little about it and our researches have not given us any concrete conclusions, so we are selling very much "as found" and "as described". It appears on first glance to be a Japanese geisha doll - but it might possibly be Chinese in origin - in a light wooden box with glass lid (quite fragile in reality). Perhaps some kind of souvenir or traditional gift. The doll is dressed in red and black fabric robes and has a ceramic head with painted features, and comes with three wigs in their own compartments in the box. To give you some sense of the size of the doll, the case measures about 15cm by 8cm (6.5" x 3").

One of our quirkier finds, this doll is definitely different and is perhaps suited to the collector or to those interested in the culture from which it comes. In terms of condition, there is some fading to the costume which we presume was originally a much deeper black and there is some thinning to the wigs, but on the whole the doll is faring quite well considering the delicacy of construction and age.

This large cup or mug was made by Crown Devon Fieldings of Stoke on Trent (stamp present on the underneath of the cup) and features the Sailor's Farewell motto. One side of the piece is printed with the words "SAILORS, FAREWELL / Sweet, oh Sweet is that sensation / Where two hearts in union meet; / But the pain of separation, / Mingles bitter with the sweet." The other side reads "Far from Home across the Sea / To Foreign climes I go. / While far away O think on me, / And I'll remember you." Similar items date from the Edwardian/early 20th Century and we've no reason to think this one is different - the maker's stamp is indicative of a piece made in that time period.

The cup is handpainted over a basic pink lustre ground and shows a scene of a sailor leaving his wife and children to go to sea. In good condition throughout with no chips or cracks, although there is some crazing to the glaze, which is not uncommon for china of this age and there is a slight linear depression in the glaze underneath the verse (see photos). Otherwise, you'd have to say this is in very good shape.
