1980s Black and White “Minilight” Desk Lamp designed by Kyoji Tanaka, Japan

A small and lightweight desk lamp, the "MINILIGHT" designed by Kyoji Tanaka dates from the 1980s and is certainly reflective of the time. Some models were colourful and hinted at Memphis Style leanings, whilst this one in black and white colour scheme provides a slightly different aesthetic whilst still firmly of its time.

The lamp comprises a conical base with the top of the cone truncated. The base houses the switch, a battery compartment and an AC adaptor socket, whilst it is also slightly hollowed to allow the shade to sit in it when the folding arm is positioned appropriately. This transforms the whole lamp into a torch-like object, with the arm now appearing more like a handle, whilst the light itself can be used almost as a lantern when in this configuration. Otherwise, the three joints - one at the base, one at an "elbow" about halfway up the arm, and another just before the shade - allow the shade to be positioned as per a normal lamp.

Inside the shade is a small fluorescent tube which gives off a pleasing light and the cylindrical shade itself can be rotated to direct light where required. The images show a variety of the positions into which the lamp and shade can be placed.

In its most compact form, the lamp measures approximately 25 cm in height (10 in.). The base has a diamater of 11 cm (4½ in.) and a height of 6cm (2¼ in.), whilst the shade is 19cm (7½ in.) long.

In good working condition, though it has not been tested with an AC adaptor. The plastics have some minor signs of use (superficial scratches, etc.) but no chips or cracks. If one was to be very picky, one would say the white plastics have yellowed slightly from their original bright white. The battery compartment (4 "AA" size batteries are used for operation) is clean.

Vintage Hitachi Moon Light Model 506 Wing Style Desk Lamp 1966

A "wing" style fluorescent tube desk lamp with one of the most distinctive and more attractive bases for a lamp of this type, this is the Hitachi "Moon Light" a.k.a. Model 506 - this one made in 1966. The wing shade housing the tube is white whilst much is made of the heavy base with a glossy black finish to the square shape, the surface of which comprises a slightly raised circular silver metallic piece with "Hitachi" branding in the middle of it, and a white push button switch opposite the gooseneck upright. It's rather good and rather unusual, and is very much the styling of its time.

This particular one has some wear and tear to the base - notably to the corners of the black box and some scuffing to the silver - and has suffered damage to part of its shade plastics (to the left hand side corner and edge). At some point in the past the latter damage has been given some repair, including remodelling and a respray (there are some signs of a green paint, probably also not original). It's not perfect by any mean, but it's also not too noticeable: certainly not bad enough to warrant being re-done and risk more damage. The lamp has been left "as is" because the overall look and the striking styling of the lamp absolutely overwhelms these shortcomings, in least in our opinion. Reasonable offers are invited for this item in its current state.

The lamp shade measures apprximately 50cm (20 in.) across and 8cm (3 in.) deep, with a height of 4cm (1½ in.) - all measurements are maximums. The base is approximately 13 cm (5 in.) square with a height of 4cm (1½ in.). The fixed part of the stand has a height of about 22cm (9 in.), whilst the gooseneck has an extended length of 14cm (6cm).

Boxed Copal 705L 24-hour Flip Clock with Luminous Digits

A boxed Copal 705L 24-hour Flip Clock with Luminous Digits in original box with instructions. The box indicates it is the bronze colour, but in reality this is the steely grey tone version. The body of the flip clock is of aluminium construction with plastic fittings and buttons, presenting a bold shape with contrasting black display section which houses the fluorescent digits. This is an uncommon and stylish flip clock in very good condition and fully working (220-240V power supply required - and currently wired to a European two-pin style plug).

Shows extremely minor signs of age and use and the box and instructions are in very good condition.

Vintage 1950s B.O.E. Pale Blue/Grey Wing Desk Tube Lamp

A classic 1950s era desk lamp with a fluorescent tube bulb and suitably retro shape and colour, a pale grey which has a hint of blue to it in certain lights with white square switch and shade interior. The base also provides room for some detailing which has an automotive or aeronautic feel to it. The partial gooseneck allows for adjustment of the wing which sits at a practical height for desk work or more subtle lighting.

Made by B.O.E. the lamp is in good vintage condition. There are minor superficial imperfections to both the shade and the base and blemishes to the paintwork, but overall it's cosmetically sound considering its age. Most importantly, that precious wing hasn't suffered any deformations or dents!

The lamp in normal use stands at approximately 35cm (14 in.) high with the solid part of the neck and base making up about 17cm (6¾ in,) of that. The wing measures approximately 40cm (16 in.) across with a depth of 9cm (3½ in.). The tube is a standard T4 or T5 diameter with bipin (two pin) connectors.

Pifco Model 992 Wing Style Desk Lamp Made in Japan

With its grey finish, sleek lines and wide wing-style shade, this Pifco Model 992 desk lamp certainly makes a statement. The low profile shade is positionable via a chromed gooseneck and the almost art-deco styled base is finished with a simple white on/off button. The lamp takes a standard fluorescent tube and is eminently practical as well as stylish in an understated way.

The lamp is fully working and is in good condition overall. As should be expected, there are some minor dings and wear but nothing which adversely affects the general look of the lamp. The "wing" measures 48cm x 8cm (19in. x 3¼ in.) and fully extended the gooseneck measures 30cm (12 in.)
