Vintage 1939 French “Ripolin” Paint Illustration and Price List

A French paint price list and accompanying letter dated January 1939 which, on the reverse side, features a very attractive and frame-able black and white illustration of various paint pots from the manufacture Ripolin. The illustration measures approximately 26cm (10½ in.) by 23cm (9 in.) with the letter on the reverse and folds out to reveal the price list/catalogue on the inside.

The paper is yellowed with some minor creasing, but is in good condition considering it is over 80 years old.

Pair of Matching Signed Framed Rei Hamon Pointillism Landscape Prints

An unusual find, this signed pair of large matching Rei Hamon litho prints date from the 1970s and have been appropriately framed for display as an eye-catching double act. Hamon was born in Auckland in 1919 and died in 2008, and, having taken it up in his middle age, was prolific and successful with his trademark pointillist skills through the latter part of the 1960s into the early 1980s, before arthritis forced a slowdown in his output. Reknowned for his knowledge of the environment and attention to the native species of New Zealand, his work combines technical skill with an individualistic approach to the subject. He was made a CBE in 1981.

Hamon's "Jewels of Okarito" from 1976 was presented by the New Zealand government to Queen Elizabeth II on her state visit, and forms one of the pair. "Return to Still Waters" from 1978 completes the couple. Both have been signed - with the latter including an indication of its edition number (128) and date in the same hand.

In good condition with some minor discoloration to the prints due to age, these are fine examples of the artist's exhaustive work on the flora and fauna of New Zealand, of pointillist technique specificially, and of sympathetic landscape art in general.

The prints are displayed inside apertures measuring 28.5 cm by 22.5 cm (11¼ in. by 8¾ in. approx.). The frames measure 46.5 cm by 40 cm (18 in. by 15¾ in. approx.). The mounts are a complementary dark grey colour. The prints are being sold as a pair but please get in touch if you would like to purchase one of them as an individual piece.

Framed Vintage German Postcard from Original Flamingoes Print by Elfriede Kabisch

A vintage German postcard from an original print by Elfriede Kabisch depicting stylised flamingoes in black and white. The striking design has been complemented with a deep-sided contemporary frame which has been painted with a matt black blackboard paint finish and which can be wall hung or set to standing.

The frame measures15.25 cm x 20cm x 3.5cm (6 in. x 8 in. x 1¼ in.) and the print measures 8.25cm x 11.5cm (3¼ in. x 4½in.).

Framed Stipplework Waterside scene by John Hull Grundy MBE FRES FRSA

A renowned name in medical illustration, (Prof.) John Hull Grundy was also an entymologist, teacher, anatomist, author and artist of considerable repute, exhibiting throughout his life and notably in 1976 at the Royal Army Medical college where his full range of works - done in his trademark stippling style - were on display. His wife, Anne Hull Grundy (nee Ullmann) was also a signifcant figure in the art world, a collector and benefactor whose bequests and donations can be found in substantial quality and number.

This framed print of a waterside scene is a nice example of Grundy's delicate and meticulous stippling technique. Measuring 21.5cm x 17.5cm (8½ in. x 6¾ in.) inside a frame 33cm x 37.5 (11 in. x 14¾ in.) the work is complemented by a pale green mount. We rather like the presentation but also think that a contemporary re-framing and re-mounting of it would do a lot to enhance what is a very striking piece.

Printers Block of Convolvulus Style Plant

A very nice looking printing block which has some age to it, we suspect. We're not experts on the plant kingdom but we believe that the print depicts a member of the convulvulus family of plants (bindweeds, etc.). The plate itself is in very good condition and the block is in generally good shape. If you wished to use this for actual printing we reckon it would work very well indeed - alternatively, it would certainly make for an interesting decorative item or small paperweight.

The block measures 6.5cm by 6cm by 2cm (2½ by 2¼ by ¾ in).

c. 1949 Road Signs Illustration

Dating from around 1949 this illustration - presumed to be from an educational book of some sort - depicts various road signs of the era, as authorised by the Ministry of Transport in that year. Some of these signs seem quite quaint when viewed from the present-day perspective, not to say quite confusing! The colourful nature of the illustration makes it a nice piece for a motoring enthusiast's wall -- or even as a gift for a driving instructor or professional driver. We particularly like the subtitle: "These make for safety on Britain's highways"!

We've mounted it temporarily on black card and inside a clip frame, but of course the buyer or recipient might ultimately choose a different method of display. The frame measures 21cm by 30cm (8¼in by 11¾in) and the illustration itself measures 14.5cm by 22cm (5¾in by 8¾in).
