Vintage Mid-Century Modern Stylised Carved Wood Bird Figure

A stunning highly stylised carved wood bird which is believed to date from the Mid-Century period. Most likely teak and probably a long-tailed tit, this is an expertly realised piece with great attention to the grain and to the form. It is typical of mid-century modern stylised decorative wood carving and is a superb and uncommon example of its type.

The bird measures approximately 30cm (12 in.) from tip of the tail to the beak. with a height of 9cm (3½ in.). It is In excellent condition with no chips to the form, just some very minor wear to the flat "base".

Vintage Carved Wood Metamorphic Lotus Flower Table Lamp

An extremely unusual metamorphic table lamp with a carved base and double-layered flower head which opens and closes to reveal the lamp. The section immediately below the petals rotates and acts as the mechanism to allow the head to open and close. Below this there a three carved open flower heads and another three buds, and lower still a carved base comprised of more buds and leaves with an opening for the flex.

The petals are all present and the head opens and closes as it should. One of the petals is a replacement of a missing original piece and there have been some repairs to the petals over time, but neither is noticeable except under close inspection. The original bulb holder has been replaced with a smaller one - one that allows the head to be fully closed with an appropriately sized bulb - and the lamp has been rewired with a modern inline switch on suitably vintage-looking plaited flex. As with all electricals, a PAT test is recommended before use in your environment. There are some minor signs of age and wear to the petals, minor losses to shape, but otherwise it is sound and there are no breaks or cracks to the carving in general.

The lamp measures approximately 41cm (16 in.) in height when closed, with the the bulb holder being approximately 28cm (11 in.). The base measures approximately 15cm (6 in.) in diameter. When fully opened the head measures apprxoimately 30 cm (12 in.) in diameter.

Handcarved Coconut Flower Design Oval Plaque

A quite kitsch but well made oval wall plaque with carved multi-toned wood design which we believe is coconut, depicting stylised flowers and vase, complete with hanging string. The background of the plaque is made of a lighter sacking style fabric and the flowers have handpainted detailing. It is a good example of folk art using some rather unusual materials.

The plaque measures approximately 30 cm by 20 cm ( 12 in. by 8 in.) and is in very good vintage condition.

Set of Vintage Turned and Carved Wooden Fruit

A set of nine very nicely turned and carved wooden fruit, consisting of a variety of almost full-size items which make for a fine decorative group. There are two lemons, two oranges, one banana, two pears, one satsuma, and one apple in the set.

The fruits are certainly of some age, handmade and are very nicely done. They have their original varnished finish, and have been gently cleaned and polished. They range in size: the pears are approximately 10cm in height, the oranges approximately 7cm in diameter, the lemons approximately 9cm long, and the banana approximately 16cm in length. Please note, the bowl is not included and is shown here purely for display purposes.

Quirky Carved Wooden Fox Made in Italy

Measuring 30cm (12in.) in length and 12.5cm (5in.) high this quirky carved wooden fox certainly makes up in size for what he lacks in... well, there's no easy to way to say it, really. It would be fair to say that he's perhaps not the prettiest of creatures, but we really love his odd looks - oversized tail, ears and snout and odd eyes - and we hope you do too!

We aren't sure of his age, but it would make sense if he were 1960s or 1970s. We do know he was made in Italy, because a label stating it is still affixed. More than that, we don't know, but we instantly found him appealing and are pleased to offer him to a new (and loving) home.

Vintage Paul Caron / Caron wood carved Old Woman

This wooden carved figure of an old woman is a quirky little vintage item which was made by Paul Caron or the Caron family who hailed from Quebec, Canada. It's a great example of the folk art style. The carving is signed and our research indicates it is either by Paul Caron himself or was made by the family company of the same name shortly after his death. Later products by the company appear to have a different form of signature, so we believe this to be an early model.

It measures 8 in / 20cm high and is in good condition, albeit with minor wear and tear consistent with age and materials.

Vintage Carved Red Cedarwood Bird

We were immediately drawn to this fellow, a carved Red Cedar wood bird when we saw him. And he followed us home as a result. There's something about him, aside from the obvious skilled craftsmanship. The base is signed with the maker's name, "C. R. Seyfort" and an indication it was made in Victoria, British Columbia. Our research shows similar items of some age, carved in a very similar way by the same craftsperson, and all show a similar flair for design and execution.

Carved in fine sympathy with the grain, this goose (?!) measures approximately 36cm (14 in.) high with a base 9cm (3½ in.) in length. At his widest he's approximately 6cm (2¼ in.), so he'll sit snugly on a narrow shelf or mantel. He's got a few scars and scrapes from old age, but he still looks perky. This is not the kind of item we would want to look pristine and perfect, anyway - it's a character piece through and through.

Set of three carved horn birds

We love these three carved birds - they have a character all of their own and we think they'd look great in a variety of decors or situations. We're unsure of their age, but reckon they are carved from either buffalo or cow horn.

There's a heron and a kingfisher and most likely a pheasant, which may indicate that these are originally South Asian. Each has a painted finish to add detail to their carving and they sit firmly on small wooden stands.

The birds vary in size with the pheasant the largest, at 15cm (6in) tall and 22cm long (8½in).

Floral Carved Brown and Orange Wood Box

A very nicely carved and coloured wooden box, which we believe was originally a cigarette box. In addition to it's floral pattern design, the interior of the box has a very nice pale gold pattern paper/fabric lining in the form of repeating fan shapes.

Suitable either for decoration or as a trinket box, this box is difficult to date and its origins are sketchy, but it looks great and that's good enough for us. It measures 14.5cm by 9.5cm by 5cm (5¾ x 3¾ x 2 in) and is in good condition, barring some wear and tear and a narrow scratch or two. These don't affect the overall aesthetics, and the box and lid hinge are both solid and functional.

Wooden Owl Candle Taper Holder

This carved wooden owl was originally made to hang on the wall and hold candle tapers, but we think it might serve any number of purposes now aside from being just rather fabulous in its own right as an engaging decorative piece. We think he'd made a great gift. The only problem will be to give it to who? Givit-twoo!

The owl measures approximately 15cm (6in) tall and about 7.5cm (3in) front to back, with an internal space for storage about 3.5cm (1¹⁄³in) by 4.5cm (1¾in). He has a slight foot injury - a crack which at some point in the past has been re-glued and feels solid.
