Vintage Carved Red Cedarwood Bird

£18.00

We were immediately drawn to this fellow, a carved Red Cedar wood bird when we saw him. And he followed us home as a result. There’s something about him, aside from the obvious skilled craftsmanship. The base is signed with the maker’s name, “C. R. Seyfort” and an indication it was made in Victoria, British Columbia. Our research shows similar items of some age, carved in a very similar way by the same craftsperson, and all show a similar flair for design and execution.

Carved in fine sympathy with the grain, this goose (?!) measures approximately 36cm (14 in.) high with a base 9cm (3½ in.) in length.  At his widest he’s approximately 6cm (2¼ in.), so he’ll sit snugly on a narrow shelf or mantel.  He’s got a few scars and scrapes from old age, but he still looks perky.  This is not the kind of item we would want to look pristine and perfect, anyway – it’s a character piece through and through.
