The cube-shaped bedside digital clock radio is perhaps one of the most "1980s" of all home appliances. Almost every audio electronics manufacturer made one and this one is the offering of Philips, initially the D3110 and later the D3112. It's a 12cm rounded cube of plastic with all of the features you'd expect, some nice design detailing, and the sort of looks that would match your 1980s bedroom. It has a three-band radio (FM/LW/MW), dual alarms, wake to radio or buzzer, slumber option, snooze ("repeat" alarm) and classic red digit display. It also has a decent sound from the speakers.

This one is in good condition albeit that the white plastic has some slight yellowing, which is not uncommon for these items. There are no chips or cracks to the plastic casing and everything functions as it should.,

Looking rather like the Audio Quattro from "Life On Mars" this is the Sony ICF-C3L Digimatic Digital Clock Radio. It's apt because it's from that era and shares the colour and shape - it's a kind of no-nonsense smoothed rectangular shape with the bulk of the front being a band of clear plastic behind which the black section houses the clock display and tuner. The top of the unit houses all of the controls., whilst the sides are therefore uncluttered. In terms of features it has most of what you'd expect - alarm, snooze, sleep, and a three band FM/MW/LW receiver. In its original form it shipped with a colour matched red plug, and we have continued that with a replacement red plug, albeit it's not quite as vivid a colour!
Approximate dimensions 19cm across the front, with a depth of 13cm and a height of just under 7cm
In excellent working condition and it really does shout "80s".

From the less well known brand Lloyd's Electronics, this Hong Kong-made digital clock radio has all the retro styling one would hope for in a vintage clock radio. There's the green digital display. The faux wood effect case. The illuminated tuner section. A splash of pseudo-chrome here and there. It might not be made by a household name, but it delivers.

In terms of functions, it has all that you'd expect: AM/FM radio tuner, the facility to wake to buzzer or radio, a snooze mode, high and low dimmer settings for the display, and a sleep function. And it actually sounds pretty good - the speaker delivers a solid and rounded sound out of quite a small package.

In good cosmetic condition with only very minor signs of age and use. The unit measures approximately 30 cm (12 in.) wide (including the tuning knob on the side), 15cm (6 in.) from front to back and has a maximum height of about 10cm (4 in.).

A fairly standard electronic clock radio from the 1970s, this is the Decca ECR-150 with all of the features you might expect from such a product of the time. What's appealing about this one is how it's delivered - in a silver housing with a forward facing display and a horizontal black panel with white labels containing most of the buttons, switches and other controls. "Space-age" is a dreadfully over-used term these days, but this certainly has a hint of it with the styling. The digital display is a very attractive green and this green is present also in the tuner section which illuminates when the radio is on.

There's a dimmer function (high/low!), a three band radio, treble/bass switch (it's either/or!), wake to buzzer or radio, a snooze function, and also a sleep function.

In good overall condition. Undoubtedly the silver plastic casing is less vibrant and less "metallic" than it once would have been and there are a few grazes to it and to the black control panel section. There are the remnants of a some attempts to "postcode" it along the right hand side and underneath - a surface etching, but nothing disastrously eye-catching! The only other things to note are a slight dent to the snooze button and that the time and alarm set buttons require a little bit of wiggling to engage. But these things aside, this is a good-looking item of its time in a clean and tidy condition.

Measures approximately 28cm (11 in.) across the front, 19cm (7½ in.) from front to back and has a maximum height of 7cm (2¾ in.)

Graphite Grey? Check.
Plastic? Check.
Red LED Display? Check.
Weird Shape? Check.
1980s? Most definitely.

This Grundig ESC20 digital clock radio has all the hallmarks of its time and a few tricks too. Not only a standard digital alarm clock radio with all the features you might expect, but also multiple alarms (alarm 1, alarm 2, and both alarm 1 and alarm 2), a calendar function. It's also unusual in that the current alarm is displayed for convenience - no need to guess or press anything to find out when it's going to go off next. Aside from that, the design is pure 80s - a big and clear red LED display housed inside a triangular wedge of a body which is a dark graphite grey colour with a subtle metallic finish. The tuning and volume knobs are prominent on one side and there is a ribbed effect to the plastic on this side and similarly on the opposite side and around the back of the casing.

The unit uses a PP3 battery as a clock back up and this is housed in a compartment to the rear underneath. The battery compartment cover is missing on this particular unit, but it doesn't affect it. Also missing is an instruction manual but it's easy to figure out. A sliding mode selector is on the front of the unit and that determines the functions of the buttons on the extreme left of the main panel display. Alarm selection is also managed on the front of the unit. On the left hand side of the unit is a small sliding selector for display brightness. On the right hand side of the unit are the previously mentioned tuning and volume adjustment knobs and below them a switch for the radio band (FM or MW)

In very good condition and fully functional. There is some minor surface grazing to the top of the unit where the snooze button resides. The unit measures approximately 19 cm (7½ in.) across the front, with a height and depth of approximately 11.5 cm (4½ in.) and 14.5 cm (6 in.) respectively.

A very scarce and unusual digital clock radio with lamp made by Ross and dating from the 1980s, the RCR-181 has some notable features. The most obvious of these is the shape and, moreover, the fact that it's possible to change it, depending on how you are using it, and where you want the lamp pointing. The best way to explain this is via the photos attached, but basically the options are 1) lamp to the front over the controls, 2) lamp to the side, or 3) lamp to the rear. The unit itself is quite a size too: about 20 cm (8in.) in height and depth, and about 10 cm (4 in.) in width.

In most other respects - bar the almost completely black plastic styling - it's a fairly standard digital clock radio from the era: AM/FM tuner, snooze function, wake to radio, display dimmer, battery back-up for the clock, etc.

This one is fully functional, but does have some minor cosmetic issues, notable some plastic "burn" marks to the right hand side of the lower portion of the unit, most likely caused by the item being in storage and having had the power cable wrapped around it. It's not awful, but it's there and should be noted - please carefully review the photos if it's a concern. Otherwise, there are a few grazes and scrapes to the plastics, but everything is intact - no cracks or chips.

Open to sensible offers for this unusual slice of 80s.... plastic!

Looking something akin to a glossy black wedge, this is the highly unusual Toshiba CR1100, which is a fairly standard digital clock radio with red LED display, except for those looks. It's probably the clock radio that Darth Vader would have by his bedside on the Death Star! You'll probably either love it or hate it, but you can't deny that it's bold and distinctive.

All the usual features are there, but the way in which they are presented is different: snooze and sleep functions, dimmable display, two-band radio, volume and tone dials, wake to alarm or radio. So it's really all about the appearance. Personally, I feel that photographs don't fully reflect how good this looks and don't really do it justice.

In good overall visual condition, notwithstanding that there are minor superficial scratches and signs of wear throughout (around the front panel function selector, for example), and that the piano black finish is prone to show up marks anyway. It has been function-tested and is currently on a UK three-pin plug.

Crossing over that period where space-age design gave way to something different, the Hitachi KC-675E is a bold slab for the bedside. A white plastic case with space-age curves and unusual layout gives way to a black metal section housing the speaker, and controls, which wraps around the lower front part of the unit. The only side control is the alarm setting switch. The clock radio has all of the features one might expect, including a three band radio (FM/MW/LW), wake to buzzer or radio option (set by the aforementioned switch), snooze and sleep modes, clock display dimmer, and illuminated tuner display. Everything appears to function as it should and the sound from the speaker is very rounded and impressive.

A good-looking piece for the bedside and in good cosmetic condition. There are some very minor losses to the black metal surfaces on edges and corners, but the plastic casing is in very good clean condition with no chips or cracks. You might be picky and say that it's very slightly yellowed, but it's only just "off-white", more of a cream in reality and it's consistent throughout which makes a big difference.

Imagine for a moment... a digital clock radio with cassette which one moment sits by your bedside and then the next becomes a personal stereo cassette player for you to use when out, I don't know, rollerblading in your neon leggings and tie-dyed top [that's a reference to the 1980s in case you didn't get it]. Well, if you imagined that and it sounds like something you just have got to own, then this is the item for you. It's made by Ross and is gloriously plastic-ky and does exactly as described in your imagination. It's a mains-powered digital clock radio/cassette player with the latter detachable to become a battery-powered personal stereo. The radio is AM and FM, you can wake to a buzzer or to the radio and it has a "snooze" function. It does everything that a digital clock radio should do, except for the detachable personal stereo part, which is unusual to say the least...!

Cosmetically, it's in reasonably good condition, though at some point in its past the power cable has been wrapped around the unit and this has led to what can only be described as surface indentations where the plastics have interacted. It's otherwise good, despite these marks and overall the styling does enough to distract from these imperfections.

Offers welcomed on this rather strange item!

A chance to buy a highly unusual item in exceptional condition, complete with original box and paperwork, this is the very snazzily-designed but rather tamely-named ECR37 made by Jones Sewing Machine Company. Yes, you read that right. Sewing Machine Company. Formed in 1860, the company made sewing machines right through to the 1980s under their own name and for others, whilst Brother of Japan formally took over the company in the late 1960s. So, this item is a slight conundrum for several reasons, notably because the eagle-eyed will have realised it's not a sewing machine, and because Brother don't seem to have made digital alarm clock radios. Puzzling.

In any event, there's more than a hint of space-age design to it - it's certainly bold in shape and style. The green LED digits, the protruding front section, the illuminated tuning display, and the complementary speaker grill and button panel design being the key elements to what makes this truly stand out from the crowd. It's unusual in so many ways.

It's in very good (possibly even completely unused) condition with funky orange and yellow box design featuring a couple enjoying some "snooze" time perhaps, and it comes with its original instruction manual. Find me another one!
