Vintage 1980s White Philips D3112 Cube Digital Clock Radio

The cube-shaped bedside digital clock radio is perhaps one of the most "1980s" of all home appliances. Almost every audio electronics manufacturer made one and this one is the offering of Philips, initially the D3110 and later the D3112. It's a 12cm rounded cube of plastic with all of the features you'd expect, some nice design detailing, and the sort of looks that would match your 1980s bedroom. It has a three-band radio (FM/LW/MW), dual alarms, wake to radio or buzzer, slumber option, snooze ("repeat" alarm) and classic red digit display. It also has a decent sound from the speakers.

This one is in good condition albeit that the white plastic has some slight yellowing, which is not uncommon for these items. There are no chips or cracks to the plastic casing and everything functions as it should.,

Red 1980s Sony Digimatic ICF-C3L Digital Clock Radio

Looking rather like the Audio Quattro from "Life On Mars" this is the Sony ICF-C3L Digimatic Digital Clock Radio. It's apt because it's from that era and shares the colour and shape - it's a kind of no-nonsense smoothed rectangular shape with the bulk of the front being a band of clear plastic behind which the black section houses the clock display and tuner. The top of the unit houses all of the controls., whilst the sides are therefore uncluttered. In terms of features it has most of what you'd expect - alarm, snooze, sleep, and a three band FM/MW/LW receiver. In its original form it shipped with a colour matched red plug, and we have continued that with a replacement red plug, albeit it's not quite as vivid a colour!

In excellent working condition and it really does shout "80s".

1980s Vintage Questar Television / Digital Clock Radio TV905CR

Quite a big slice of 1980s plastic, this is the Questar TV905CR which is a combined television and digital clock radio for the bedside (presumably, but not compulsory). It's a cream affair with some suitably 1980s colours - red LED digits, black fascia plate, grey buttons, and pale yellow and green details. There's no carry handle, so presumably it was not intended to be truly portable. Amongst its capabilities is a two-band AM/FM radio with a good aerial, a digital clock with alarm with snooze function, and a black and white TV (with external RF input meaning it should work with a RF modulator / set-top box such as Freeview). A label on the back of the unit provides us with a date, 1988.

In good cosmetic condition and working. The plastic housing is slightly cream in tone, whilst it might have been brilliant white originally, but it looks fine as it's an even tone. Otherwise, there are no chips or cracks to the plastics and no missing knobs, buttons or sliders. The unit can powered via mains or AC adapator and a 9V battery safeguards the clock in the event of power disruption.

The unit measures approximately 23cm across the front, about 12cm high, with a depth of 18cm.

1980s Black and Red Matsui CR4535 Digital Alarm Clock Radio

A brand almost synonymous with the 1980s and with a design to match, this is a Matsui CR4535 electronic clock radio which is a no-frills digital alarm clock with radio with black angular shape and red design accents. We're not making this available on the basis that it's an 80s design classic, but it is working and very clean, and it is a very good example of "High Street" electronic products of the time.

It has the basic features you'd expect, housed in a plastic (of course) in a relatively compact body, measuring 20cm across the front, with a depth of 14cm, and a height of 6cm. The radio is two-band (AM/FM), there are snooze and sleep functions and two alarms, and you can choose to wake to the radio or to a buzzer.

Vintage Sony ICF-C17L Digital Clock Radio, 1985

Dating from 1985, this is the Sony "Digimatic" ICF-C17L digital clock radio which is a very compact bedside electronic alarm and radio with a slanted design which one can only characterise as "very 80s". It's mostly a silver-coloured affair aside from the expanse of black at the front where the time display and tuner are situated. It also has a rather pleasing blue-green display and a rolling bar at the side for the volume and three position radio band selector. On top is a familiar style knob for the radio and alarm functions, common to many of the "Digitmatic" range - it's a rotating selector with a push button to activate the time setting position so as to prevent accidental changes. Nice. A battery backup provides clock power in the event of the unit being unplugged or losing power. Also nice.

This one is in good condition where it counts - the display is nice and clear with only minimal superficial scratches and the body is on the whole in good condition. There's some wear to the buttons on the top and to the corners, and the odd graze, but it's far from being the worst we've seen. Overall, for a 35+ year old item which would have been used on a daily basis, it's very good indeed. The unit measures 25cm long (9¾ in.) with a height of 9cm (3½ in.) and a depth of 8cm (3¼ in.)

Vintage 1980 Toshiba CR-3000 Stereo Digital Clock Radio

Looking rather like a black plastic "Toblerone" packet, this is the Toshiba CR-3000 Stereo Digital Clock Radio, which dates from 1980. No surprises there - the glossy black finish, minimalism, and angular shapes are typical of that cross-over from space-age design to the 1980s. In many respects it's a fairly standard electronic clock radio, aside from the design, but there are some interesting features which set it apart too. First of all, that long design means that the stereo speakers do indeed have some spread to them and, what's more, two inputs on the left-hand side of the unit allows for further speakers to be added to enhance the sound. All of the controls are very neatly located on the top edge of the unit in a slightly recessed groover or are to the rear on the sloping surface, which means the front it gloriously uncluttered - just the two speakers and the clock and tuner displays. If you're a fan of sleek and stylish design then it ticks all the boxes.

This unit is in very good condition overall. There are, as to be expected, signs of use - notably some marks to the rear and superficial scratches to the high-gloss front, but otherwise the plastics are in very good condition, no chips or cracks. As a bonus, the original box and instructions are present, albeit the former has more obvious signs of age and wear.

The unit measures approximately 42cm long with a height of 5cm and a depth of 6cm (16.5 in., 2 in. and 2½ in. respectively).

Vintage Red Cascade CR-206 Cube Digital Alarm Clock Radio

De rigeur in the 80s, and a perfect match for the black, grey and red bedrooms of the period, this is a cube-shaped red and black LED diaplay clock radio by Cascade. It's a fairly standard (and some might say primitive) affair, but it's very evocative of the time and the style which prevailed.

It's a two band (MW/LW) radio and alarm (wake to buzzer or radio) with snooze and sleep modes, and the classic red digital LED display. It's in good condition, with just some minor signs of age and wear throughout, but working. Battery backup is provided for the clock by means of a PP3 battery which fits into the compartment to the rear of the unit.

Early 1980s Brown and Silver Philips Model 390 Digital Clock Radio

A small digital clock radio with red LED display in a good-looking brown and silver body, this is the Philips model 390, which dates from the early 1980s. It's a fairly standard piece of kit in terms of functions, with sleep, snooze and alarm mode options, but the styling is something of a cross-over from the seventies to the eighties. The top is dominated by the grille over the speaker, and whilst the angled front of the unit is a silver grey tone, the rest of it is a deep brown colour.

It's a compact design - the unit measures 24cm across the front, 16cm from front to back and 6cm in height (9½, 6¼ and 2½ in. respectively) - and not without style, and it's fully functional. There are some minor signs of wear and age but nothing which detracts visually. There is a little bit of dust inside the display, common in these units, but far from the worst we've seen. An optional battery (PP3) provides backup power for the clock (not supplired).

Vintage Prinzsound SDC18 AM/FM Stereo Flip Clock Radio with AUX IN

A vintage flip clock radio made by PrinzSound, specifically the SDC18 which boasts some quality features inside a very masculine and large frame. It's stylish in a late 70s kind of way - wood effect, metallic grey panelling and black detals throughout and lots of shiny "chrome" controls. The unit has a decent tuner which picks stations up nicely, is true stereo (a light in the front indicates radio broadcasts in stereo) and it produces a good rounded sound from the twin speakers on either side of the body. Rather unusually, the SDC18 has an auxiliary input for incoming audio, making this quite a useful modern-day appliance for use with phone, MP3 player or even with a wireless audio adapter.

These features are on top of the more standard things you'd expect - radio or buzzer alarm, snooze and sleep controls and so on.

The flip clock mechanism works flawlessly and although the illumination is not what it would have been when new, it's usable. The tuning and volume controls are a little bit crackly but not bad at all. The unit is in very good condition with no chips or cracks to the body. There are some minor dents to the top surface near the "snooze" button and a few minor scratches and grazes and signs of wear throughout, but nothing very distracting or noticeable. All in all, a very uncommon item - and very bold aesthetically - which stands the test of time, particularly because of the AUX IN option it provides and the quality sound it outputs.

The unit measures approximately 37.5cm (14¾ in.) across the front, 18cm (7 in.) from front to back and 13cm (5 in.) in height. All measurements include any protruding knobs or controls. Please get in touch if you require specific measurements.

Lloyd’s Electronics Green LED Digital Alarm Clock Radio Model J227

From the less well known brand Lloyd's Electronics, this Hong Kong-made digital clock radio has all the retro styling one would hope for in a vintage clock radio. There's the green digital display. The faux wood effect case. The illuminated tuner section. A splash of pseudo-chrome here and there. It might not be made by a household name, but it delivers.

In terms of functions, it has all that you'd expect: AM/FM radio tuner, the facility to wake to buzzer or radio, a snooze mode, high and low dimmer settings for the display, and a sleep function. And it actually sounds pretty good - the speaker delivers a solid and rounded sound out of quite a small package.

In good cosmetic condition with only very minor signs of age and use. The unit measures approximately 30 cm (12 in.) wide (including the tuning knob on the side), 15cm (6 in.) from front to back and has a maximum height of about 10cm (4 in.).
