British Columbia Centenary Two-Handled Lidded Ceramic Jar

£9.00

Made in Japan by the company of Shafford (suspicious name!) this two-handled lidded ceramic jar was a souvenir celebrating the centenary of British Columbia (1858-1958). On top of the native symbolism and form the jar features Centenary Sam, the “mascot” of the celebrations.  The base of the jar proudly exclaims that it has been hand-decorated, whilst the somewhat erratic nature of these hand decorations adds to the quirky nature of the item. Compare the hand decorated “totem” design and the rendition of Centenary Sam with other centenary memorabilia and you’ll see a fair degree of artistic licence at play!

The jar is in very good condition and measures 13cm from handle to handle (5 in.), with a height of 10cm (4 in.) and a base diameter of 10cm (4 in.)
